Back at the favourite X, with an early X-mas present for fans... After a great acid/space rock set from Xenon Codex, who we hope to be seeing more of soon, the Assassins launched into a long 2 hour set containing a mix of old favourites and some new material and arrangements. Helped out ably by both Guin and Jo dancing, MyChoonz and an enthuthiastic and appreciative crowd.

Joined by Harvey Bainbridge, Huw Lloyd-Langton and Bridget Wishart for their set, the evening saw a wide range of spacerocking bands, with it also being, unfortunately, the last performance by Underground Zer0 with the original line-up (all the best to Karl in his new life in Thailand!). And all in aid of a good cause too!

The last date of the Assassins' summer tour went with a bang (not to mention a few whooshes, quite a lot of wibbles and the occasional bleep), with an excellent crowd in a great venue. We should be back here early in the new year.

An unusual venue for the band (and the last live music act at the North Star - shame!): a marquee in the pub's garden and on a chilly September evening too! But that didn't stop all but 2 hours of space rock covering all the way from the early 70s through the 90s: Paul Brookes has kindly provided us with a YouTube video of Assault & Battery/Golden Void.

Set list: Uncle Sam's On Mars/Blue Shift/Brainstorm/Camera That Could Lie - Warriors/Assault & Battery/Golden Void - Magnu - Reefer Madness - Psi Power - Master of the Universe/Where Are They Now? - Silver Machine

AKA Sproutfest III, the Assassins' favourite festival suffered from the 2007 English Summer, but that didn't stop the die-hard crowd from staying to the end of the afternoon. Following Huw's acoustic set, the Assassins joined him on stage for a jam of Hurry On Sundown, before putting in a soggy set to an appreciative audience, before ending with a sonic assult of Master of the Universe, Where Are They Now? and Silver Machine with Huw once again. Same time next year...let's hope for better weather!

Not even a quick hymn to Magnu could stop the rain from turning up half way through the Assassins' set, but that didn't stop them carryng on or the crowd enjoying the music. Thanks to Pedro for an enjoyable family affair.

A hair under 2 hours of space rockery to a most appreciative and enthusiastic crowd - so a big thanks to them and the venue for making it a very enjoyable evening for the band too. Oh, and it's a Tornado...

Second encore: High Rise

Carl's last gig with the band was initally marred by technical problems with loud humming bass amps, but once resolved, the band kicked into a gig that would be an excellent send off for him. With fantastic costumes worn by Jo and a great lightshow from Photonweaver too.
The X, Exeter Hall, Oxford20 January 2007
Bill: Assassins of Silence, supported by Modern Cliches
First set (Elements That Gather Here): Warriors/Assault & Battery/Golden Void - Magnu - Lord of Light - Spirit of the Age
Second set: McGovern's Magic Theatre/Steppenwolf - Psi Power - Reefer Madness - High Rise - Uncle Sam's On Mars/Blue Shift/Damnation Alley
Encore: Kerb Crawler - Lighthouse

After a whizz through the tracks off the new CD, the band launched into a Calvert-era set with a distinctive theatrical flavour. With old favourites, including Reefer Madness and High Rise, and newer tracks such as Steppenwolf and Lighthouse (OK, so that's not a Calvert song, but who's counting?), this was a good start to the new year.
